Legislative Advocacy
Promotes knowledge and resources that help individuals obtain a greater income and prevent food insecurity. Continued advocacy for legislative changes is crucial for the goal of preventing poverty.
Mission Statement: The Legislative Committee will serve as a resource to the Hunger and Poverty Prevention Partnership by identifying, prioritizing and informing the Partnership about legislative initiatives of concern to low income families and individuals. With the approval and participation of the partnership, the committee will actively promote educational experiences related to relevant legislation.

News
We completed the development of the Voter ID brochure (a big thanks to Jodie Lewis). The brochure has been dispersed to the HPPP membership and community agencies with the goal to educate the public on what they need ( and how to get it) for a Voter ID to vote in the 2012 elections. We will be getting input from the HPPP membership at the January meeting for suggestions on what our next project should be.
Current and Ongoing Activities
How can we make it as easy as possible for constituents to contact
their legislators and local
government leaders?
- Can we expand the HPPP website to include local county leaders
contact information?
- Can we include a template on how to address key issues with our legislators?
Future concerns that the committee would like to address:
- Health Care
- Access to Mental Health services
Also continuing information regarding Vision 2020 Campaign (Ending Childhood Poverty by 2020) and distributing information about pay-day loans.
Vision 2020 – The Wisconsin Council on Children and Families (WCCF), The Wisconsin Head Start Association and the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP) have a shared goal to end child poverty in Wisconsin by 2020.
A change in leadership for WCCF may impact this initiative.
A pay day loan bill
was signed into law limiting the loans to $1500. or 35% of applicants
monthly income, whichever is less. Borrowers can only roll outstanding
loans over once, and they can cancel within 24 hours. Governor Doyle
amended the bill to exclude the use of Auto titles as collateral. The law
also prohibits payday loan stores from being situated with 1,500 feet of one
another or within 150 feet of residential areas.
